Introduction

Sodium Carbonate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Na2CO3 and its hydrates. It is also famously known by different names such as Soda ash, Washing Soda, Soda crystals.

Properties

All the forms of sodium carbonate are white and water soluble. All of them have stong alkaline taste. The aqueous solutions are moderately alkaline in nature. Na2CO3 is hygroscopic in nature i.e it readily attracts water.

Uses and Applications

Glass industry

> Serves as a flux for silica. It lowers the melting point of the mixture.
> Used to make bottle and window glass

water Softening

> Used to soften hard water by removing Magnesium and Calcium ions. These ions form insoluble precipitates with carbonate ions

Food industry

> It is a food additive (E500) used as acidity regulator, anti cracking agent and stabilizer
> Used in the production of sherbet powder

Others

> Used as wetting agent by brick industry to reduce the amount of water required to extrude the clay
> Act as foaming agent and abrasive in toothpastes
